Don’t Get Tricked: Cyber Risks in Sponsorships and NIL Deals
By Judy Selby | Founder, KNKRSM – How Champions Conquer Their Digital Edge

For athletes, brand deals and sponsorships can be life-changing opportunities. Whether it’s a professional endorsement or a college NIL agreement, these deals can create financial security and open new doors. At the same time, they can also open the door to cyber risks if you are not careful.

Cybercriminals know that athletes are eager to seize opportunities and that many deals happen quickly over email, text, or social media. Fake offers, phishing attacks, and contract scams are becoming more common, and they can cost athletes money, privacy, and even eligibility.

Why It Matters

Sponsorships and NIL deals often require athletes to share personal and financial information. That makes them a target for fraudsters who want access to:

  • Bank Details or Money: Hackers may pose as brands or agencies to trick you into sending account information or money (such as deposits for fake photo shoots).

  • Personal Data: Scammers can request Social Security numbers, passports, or tax forms to commit identity theft.

  • Digital Signatures: Fake contracts may include malicious links that steal your login credentials.

  • Brand Reputation: Partnering with a fraudulent “brand” can damage your credibility with fans and real sponsors.

How Athletes Can Protect Themselves

  1. Verify the Source: Always confirm that a brand or agent is legitimate. Check official websites and contact them through trusted channels.

  2. Use Professional Support: Work with an advisor, lawyer, or agent who can review deals and spot red flags.

  3. Secure Your Email: Use two-factor authentication and a professional email account for all business communication.

  4. Be Wary of Urgency: Scammers often pressure you to act quickly. Take your time before signing or sending information.

  5. Keep Personal and Business Separate: Do not mix personal accounts with deal negotiations. Use a dedicated email and secure storage for contracts.

The Bottom Line

Every deal has two sides. One side is the opportunity, and the other side is the risk. By slowing down, verifying who you are working with, and protecting your personal data, you can make sure your sponsorships and NIL deals help build your future instead of putting it in danger.
