Fix What’s Bugging You: Clearing the Path to Focus and Productivity

We have all experienced this—you sit down to work on something important, only to find your attention drifting to everything except the task at hand.

Perhaps it is the stack of papers on your desk that you have been meaning to file, the leaky faucet in the kitchen, or even the windows that suddenly seem like they must be cleaned immediately. These distractions are not random; rather, they are often minor annoyances that have been ignored for too long.

If left unaddressed, they can drain your focus and energy, diverting you from your priorities.

The solution? Create a list of everything that is distracting you and allocate time to resolving it. Here is how this simple strategy can enhance your productivity.

1. Make the List

Start by identifying all the little (and big) things that annoy you in your environment. Walk around your home, office, or workspace and take note of anything that:

  • Is messy, cluttered, or disorganized.

  • Needs to be repaired, cleaned, or replaced.

  • Feels like a lingering “to-do” you keep putting off.

Don’t overthink it—just write everything down. This could include:

  • A drawer full of random items you can’t seem to organize.

  • A broken chair that wobbles every time you sit in it.

  • The pile of unopened mail staring at you from across the room.

2. Tackle the List, One Annoyance at a Time

Once you have your list, carve out time to address each item. You don’t have to fix everything at once—just commit to steady progress.

  • Start Small: Pick a few quick wins to build momentum, like organizing that one drawer or filing the papers on your desk.

  • Schedule It: Block out time in your calendar for larger tasks, like scheduling a repair or deep-cleaning a cluttered area. Treat these tasks like appointments with yourself.

  • Outsource When You Can: For things you can’t or don’t want to handle yourself—like repairing appliances or deep cleaning—hire help. It’s worth the investment if it frees up your mental space.

3. Understand the “Distraction Trap”

When I was studying for my first Bar exam, I noticed how my mind would look for anything to distract me from the work I needed to do. Suddenly, cleaning the oven or washing the windows felt urgent—tasks I’d never otherwise prioritize over bar prep.

These distractions weren’t just about procrastination. They were a way for my brain to escape the stress of studying. If you find yourself drawn to busywork or minor annoyances, it’s a sign that these unresolved issues are taking up mental space. Fixing them removes that excuse and allows you to fully focus on what matters.

4. Clear Your Mental and Physical Space

When you eliminate these small annoyances, you’ll be amazed at how much lighter and more focused you feel. Your workspace becomes a place of clarity, not distraction. Instead of thinking about the pile of papers or the wobbly chair, your mind is free to focus on your biggest priorities.

Think of it as creating an environment that supports your success. When your space feels organized and functional, it’s easier to get into the flow and stay there.

5. Revisit Your List Regularly

Life happens, and new annoyances will pop up. Make it a habit to revisit your list every month or so. Ask yourself:

  • What’s been bothering me lately?

  • What small fixes would make my life easier?

  • How can I handle these before they become distractions?

This ongoing process helps you stay ahead of the clutter—both physical and mental—so you can stay focused on your goals.

The Bottom Line

Your environment plays a huge role in your productivity. When you take the time to fix the things that annoy you, you remove distractions and create a space that supports your work, not hinders it.

So, make the list. Handle the mess. Repair what’s broken. Clear the path for focus and success. By eliminating those small annoyances, you’ll free your mind to concentrate on what truly matters—and finally stop procrastinating with oven cleaning!
