🏛️ NCAA’s House Settlement Reshapes College Sports
On June 6, a federal judge granted final approval to the historic $2.8 billion settlement in House v. NCAA. This decision allows Division I schools to begin directly sharing revenue with athletes—up to $20.5 million annually per school—starting July 1, 2025. The deal also provides backpay to athletes dating back to 2016 and establishes a new College Sports Commission to oversee the process.

⚖️ Title IX Lawsuit Challenges the Settlement
Already, eight female athletes from Vanderbilt University, University of Virginia, and the College of Charleston filed a Title IX lawsuit challenging the fairness of the House settlement. They argue that the current payout model disproportionately benefits male athletes and violates federal gender equity laws. The lawsuit seeks to block or restructure the financial terms to ensure female athletes receive equal compensation.

🏢 Institutional Response & Oversight
NCAA President Charlie Baker called the settlement “a new beginning,” pointing to increased clarity and stability for schools navigating NIL rules. A new College Sports Commission will enforce revenue-sharing rules, roster oversight, and transparency in athlete deals. Meanwhile, Deloitte has rolled out “NIL Go,” a centralized platform for vetting all deals above $600, which already is drawing both interest and scrutiny.
🎓 Schools Opt In & Expand NIL Staff
Rice University hired former Olympian Tasha Moser as Associate Athletic Director for NIL as part of its investment in athlete empowerment.
Siena College announced it will opt into the settlement and transition its NIL collective into an in-house department for better compliance and support.

💬 Political & Legal Tensions Around NIL
Democrats in Congress are pushing back on recently proposed NIL legislation, warning that it could roll back hard-won athlete rights secured through litigation like House. Critics argue the bill could reduce athletes’ ability to negotiate NIL deals and undermine gender equity protections.
